Soon after the incident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “It has come to notice that a Dibrugarh University student is hurt in an alleged case of ragging. Close watch maintained & followup action coordinated with district admn. Efforts on to nab the accused, victim being provided medical care. Appeal to students, say NO to Ragging”.
In a separate tweet, the chief minister also tagged the Dibrugarh district administration and police authorities, urging them to take action. While a magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident, the police said the university administration would conduct a separate internal inquiry.
Speaking to indianexpress.com, Dibrugarh SP Shwetank Mishra said on Monday, “There are five persons named in the FIR. We have apprehended three, including one named in the FIR and two others who were involved, according to witnesses.” Search is on for the remaining accused, he added.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the student had earlier filed a complaint of ragging with the university administration and the hostel warden.
Dibrugarh University Vice-Chancellor Jiten Hazarika told media persons that the university was inquiring into the issue and strict action would be taken against those involved. A disciplinary committee of the university is investigating the allegations, including complaints previously lodged by the student.
