A man with multiple cases pending against him was shot dead by police in Assam’s Hailakandi district on Monday after he, police said, refused to surrender.
Police said Afzal Hussain Barbhuiyan, who had eight cases pending against him in Cachar district, was shot dead in self defence as he scuffled with the police when asked to surrender.
Afzal was an accused in crimes such as kidnapping, ransom and vehicle theft.
Hailakandi SP Leena Doley said after a tip off that Afzal was in Hailakandi, a police team tracked him down in a car. “The police team asked him to surrender and get off the vehicle. He, however, snatched the gun from a Head Constable and tried to shoot him. Another personnel fired and the bullet hit Afzal in the neck. He was taken to a hospital but died during treatment,” the SP said.
The police action was lauded by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who posted on X: “Notorious dacoit Afzal Hussain Laskar, alias Lal, was intercepted by Cachar Police near the Silchar-Hailakandi border. After firing at police, he was shot in self-defence and later declared dead. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident…”
